Genoa Boat Show: Superyacht Industry Divided as Italian Builders Lead the Way
The Genoa International Boat Show, opening today in the Ligurian capital, reveals a stark division within the yachting industry. While demand for high-end superyachts continues to drive growth – with over 1,000 boats on display and a record number of multihulls launched – smaller recreational boat builders are facing significant challenges due to rising costs, limited berth availability, and broader international economic uncertainty.
A Two-Speed Market
The show’s organizers, Confindustria Nautica, have implemented a strategic shift to bolster the event's prominence. The new dates, avoiding clashes with Cannes and Monaco, aim to provide exhibitors with more space and enhance the show’s international standing. This strategy appears successful, with a 4% increase in exhibition area and a remarkable 28% rise in multihull launches – a record for Genoa.
Luxury Redefined: Italian Craftsmanship at the Forefront
The ‘Living Made in Italy’ exhibition area is showcasing this trend, focusing on luxury and premium yachts over 24 metres. Vessels like Sanlorenzo’s SHE – a reimagining of 1960s Italian motor yachts with Lissoni’s interiors – exemplify the commitment to bespoke design and advanced technology. Other notable launches include Cantieri Capelli’s Stradivari 52, a maxi RIB inspired by Cremona's violin-making tradition, and Azimut’s Grande 44M, boasting a carbon fibre structure for reduced emissions.
Innovative features are also emerging, such as the Volvo Penta IPS hybrid propulsion system in SHE, allowing for electric operation at low speeds. The SL80A utilizes an asymmetric design to maximize interior space and connect directly with the sea. These advancements reflect a broader industry trend towards fuel efficiency and sustainability.
Looking Ahead
Despite overall market headwinds, Italy remains the global leader in superyacht construction. The Genoa Boat Show serves as a crucial platform for showcasing this leadership and highlighting the evolving demands of a discerning clientele seeking luxury, innovation, and sustainable design.
